With the sad passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, a legal giant and fierce defender of the Constitution, President Obama has an opportunity to submit another Supreme Court nomination to the Senate for consideration. And he is hoping that the Republicans controlling the Senate will have amnesia when it comes to how his party has behaved when the shoe was on the other foot.

Remember what Chuck Schumer said in 2007? How about Robert Bork? There’s a reason Bork isn’t a Supreme Court Justice, and we instead have the unpredictable Anthony Kennedy sitting on the bench. Or how about when Obama, as a Senator, filibustered Justice Samuel Alito? Well, through his paid mouthpiece, he now says he “regrets” doing that.

President Obama “regrets” filibustering the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito in 2006, his top spokesman said Wednesday, though he maintains that the Republican opposition to his effort to replace Justice Antonin Scalia is unprecedented.

“That is an approach the president regrets,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said.

In other words, do as I say, not as I do. They are just salivating over the chance to replace a conservative with another liberal to shift the balance of the Court for a generation. Expect this to become on of the top issues in the months ahead, and the Democrats to have an extreme case of amnesia.

Oh, and speaking of Justice Scalia, Obama will be skipping his funeral. He’ll go to the viewing the day before and send Joe Biden to the funeral. His mouthpiece declined to comment on whether or not he’ll be playing golf during the funeral.

Update: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did the right thing when he said that the Senate will not confirm anyone Obama nominates to fill the vacancy. By doing so there is a defense against the racist/sexist smears that are sure to come. But now Senator Chuck Grassley has thrown a wrench into things. Follow the link and read what he’s up to. This is another reason the loud mouthed, blowhard, orange faced buffoon Donald Trump is so popular with angry Republicans.
